“The true Age of Sugar had begun - and it was doing more to reshape the world than any ruler, empire or war had ever done,” Marc Aronson and Marina Budhos write in their 2010 book, “Sugar Changed the World.” Over the four centuries that followed Columbus’s arrival, on the mainlands of Central and South America in Mexico, Guyana and Brazil as well as on the sugar islands of the West Indies - Cuba, Barbados and Jamaica, among others - countless indigenous lives were destroyed and nearly 11 million Africans were enslaved, just counting those who survived the Middle Passage. It was the introduction of sugar slavery in the New World that changed everything. It remained little more than an exotic spice, medicinal glaze or sweetener for elite palates. From the earliest traces of cane domestication on the Pacific island of New Guinea 10,000 years ago to its island-hopping advance to ancient India in 350 B.C., sugar was locally consumed and very labor-intensive. Even before harvest time, rows had to be dug, stalks planted and plentiful wood chopped as fuel for boiling the liquid and reducing it to crystals and molasses. Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York Public Libraryįor thousands of years, cane was a heavy and unwieldy crop that had to be cut by hand and immediately ground to release the juice inside, lest it spoil within a day or two. It seems reasonable to imagine that it might have remained so if it weren’t for the establishment of an enormous market in enslaved laborers who had no way to opt out of the treacherous work.Ĭhildren on a Louisiana sugar-cane plantation around 1885. In Europe at that time, refined sugar was a luxury product, the backbreaking toil and dangerous labor required in its manufacture an insuperable barrier to production in anything approaching bulk. None of this - the extraordinary mass commodification of sugar, its economic might and outsize impact on the American diet and health - was in any way foreordained, or even predictable, when Christopher Columbus made his second voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in 1493, bringing sugar-cane stalks with him from the Spanish Canary Islands. Among black non-Hispanic women, they are nearly double those of white non-Hispanic women, and one and a half times higher for black men than white men. During the same period, diabetes rates overall nearly tripled. Over the last 30 years, the rate of Americans who are obese or overweight grew 27 percent among all adults, to 71 percent from 56 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control, with African-Americans overrepresented in the national figures. If it is killing all of us, it is killing black people faster. Sugar has been linked in the United States to diabetes, obesity and cancer. It aims to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of our national narrative. The 1619 Project is an ongoing initiative from The New York Times Magazine that began in August 2019, the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery. That’s nearly twice the limit the department recommends, based on a 2,000-calorie diet. Americans consume as much as 77.1 pounds of sugar and related sweeteners per person per year, according to United States Department of Agriculture data. Louisiana’s sugar-cane industry is by itself worth $3 billion, generating an estimated 16,400 jobs.Ī vast majority of that domestic sugar stays in this country, with an additional two to three million tons imported each year. The United States sugar industry receives as much as $4 billion in annual subsidies in the form of price supports, guaranteed crop loans, tariffs and regulated imports of foreign sugar, which by some estimates is about half the price per pound of domestic sugar. The United States makes about nine million tons of sugar annually, ranking it sixth in global production. Those ubiquitous four-pound yellow paper bags emblazoned with the company logo are produced here at a rate of 120 bags a minute, 24 hours a day, seven days a week during operating season. It is North America’s largest sugar refinery, making nearly two billion pounds of sugar and sugar products annually. Domino Sugar’s Chalmette Refinery in Arabi, La., sits on the edge of the mighty Mississippi River, about five miles east by way of the river’s bend from the French Quarter, and less than a mile down from the Lower Ninth Ward, where Hurricane Katrina and the failed levees destroyed so many black lives.

The plug-in still has to be compiled from sources, and requires the installation of the GIMP 2.9 development packages. Moreover, the plug-in provides all the non-destructive editing capabilities of the standalone editor, including RGB curves, Lab-based BW conversion, selective color editing, etc… In fact, the photoflow plug-in only works with the 2.9 version of GIMP, and is at the moment of writing not yet compatible with earlier versions. The plug-in works is similarly to the UFraw one: when opening a RAW image, GIMP opens the GUI interface of the plug-in and sends the RAW file to it for processing. If you’re an Ubuntu user you can add Otto Kesselgulasch’s GIMP PPA to upgrade to the latest release. Bonus: this is an officially maintained package, too! The best place is on Flathub, where the latest version of GIMP is always available to install. Ubuntu 18.04 ships with a much older version of GIMP in its archive (GIMP 2.8.22) so to benefit from all the changes and improvements in the 2.10.x series you’ll need to do look elsewhere. This caveat is temporary and GIMP will let you know when it’s finished loading your fonts. The relative downside to asynchronous font loading (as you’ll see in the video above) is that not all of your fonts might will be available right away should you try to use the text tool the moment the app appears. Children’s toys contain dark spirits that look to be sculpted from old, clotted blood playful, smiling elves laugh hysterically when one of their number explodes and dies a smiling face can never, ever be trusted. Here the same principle applies, but fills each screen instead with dread and the certain knowledge that everything you see is much worse than it looks. With the freedom to explore and experiment came a constant parade of pleasant surprises waiting around every corner, infused with a spirit of playfulness and adventure. The Czech developer’s previous titles have typically succeeded on the strength of their by-now-familiar formula: inviting us into a fabulous, lively world to tinker with abandon, with no exposition or explanation beyond what can be observed from direct experience. Aside from the constant recurrence of blankly staring smiley-face creatures, there’s very little connecting the three segments they play, essentially, like themed levels.Īmanita understands the expectations players will have coming in and does its best to subvert them at every turn. In the first, the boy chases after his ball through a dark, largely monochromatic playroom full of demonic toys in the second, he tries to rescue his bunny from the jaws of a giant, cannibalistic rabbit-monster in a circular, deceptively sunshiny countryside in the third he travels with his dog through a monster-haunted forest. Happy Game opens with an unnamed little boy laying down to bed in his darkened room. If it doesn’t, though, there’s almost no chance that this will turn out to be the game for you. If it does-and make no mistake, my answer was and continues to be “Yes”-then odds are you’ll find a lot to like in Happy Game. The question to ask, then, is whether that sounds like a good time to you. Happy Game may be the brainchild of developer Jaromír Plachý, who headed up such past Amanita projects as CHUCHEL and Botanicula, but don’t let its pedigree, simple gameplay and cartoony aesthetic fool you: this is so far removed from the bright, all-ages fun of those titles that it’s practically in another galaxy. About halfway through I thought I might need to get up and take a break for a bit, so unrelentingly bleak was its atmosphere, but as with all good horror stories I knew it wouldn’t help: it would still be sitting there, waiting patiently for me to come back. “Please note: Happy Game is not a happy game,” reads the introductory text to Amanita Design’s new horror puzzler, and boy howdy it is not kidding. pro 9 - From formZ pro 8.5/8.6 345 Upgrade to formZ pro 9 - From formZ pro 8 395.
So I know that, as that music was playing, you enjoyed those attractive young men and what they were playing so much more than you are going to enjoy what I have to say that I hated to see them leave. Didn't I tell you when you were here that you should cut out your drinking if you wanted to improve your hearing?" He said, "Yes." The doctor said, "Why didn't you do it?" He said, "Doctor, when I got home I considered it and I just decided that I like what I drink so much better than what I hear !" "Well," said the doctor, "I can't do anything for you if you won't follow my advice and take my prescription. And he said, "Now have you cut out your drinking?" And he said, "No." The doctor examined him carefully and said, "How much are you drinking these days?" He said, "Well, I drink about a pint a day." The doctor said, "If you want to improve your hearing you are going to have to cut out your drinking."Ībout 90 days later the fellow went back to the doctor and the doctor examined him again and his hearing hadn't improved a bit. One of our eider statesmen found difficulty in his hearing and he went to the doctor. Little primary health care.I am not unmindful of how you must feel and I was thinking, as the music was leaving, about a story that occurred down in my own hills of Texas. Political parties banned and strikes restricted. Only 17% of children in primary education. Little participation in decision-making at any level.Ĭentre-right military government, with token civilian involvement. Self-sufficiency in food production is attainable. Gulf between urban/rural elites and peasantry ever widening. The new military government under Colonel Zerbo has made the expected bold promises to tackle basic problems.īut the recent repressive measures against the trade unions and opposition groups suggest it has an even greater interest in consolidating its power. Despite internal divisions it has successfully avoided making party political allegiances and its thirst for economic and political democracy has held many an authoritarian government in check.Ī wave of strikes in 1980 led to the fall of the 14-year-old Lamizana regime and with it the conservative politicians who had governed for twenty years or more. The progressive trade union movement in the towns is another encouraging feature nowadays. One positive result of this experience, however, is that the need for consultation and organization at the village level is beginning to be understood. But it is the local planners and peasant farmers who have suffered - for they are the ones who are blamed when the projects fail, as they often do. The Voltaics have become the guinea pigs for every and any kind of aid. The years since independence have seen a succession of weak military and civilian governments - with a laissez-faire attitude that has provided a haven for foreign trading companies as well as the international aid community which is here en masse. But a subsistence farmer hasn’t much hope of ever obtaining credit for a plough. Banks make loans to civil servants to build villas. And there is no easy escape from the vicious cycle of poverty in most peasant communities. And stagnating food production, poor health and underemployment all contribute to the tragic exodus of the youth to the plantations of the Ivory Coast.Ĭoncentrating scarce resources in the towns has meant that Upper Volta has one of the lowest levels of literacy and health care in the world. This semi-feudal world has hardly evolved in 20 years of independence. The superficial prosperity of Ouagadougou, however, cruelly masks the naked poverty of the rural areas. Along the tree lined boulevards that the French left behind, the mopeds and the Peugeots of civil servants and businessmen now outnumber the donkeys and the bicycles of the poor majority. And spacious air-conditioned supermarkets serve the ‘Voltaic’ and expatriate elites. Under the watchful eyes of countless vultures, the colourful central market stocks everything from sorghum to Sony tape recorders. Things have changed now though - thanks to the Sahel drought of the 1970s and the subsequent foreign aid programme.Īfter a decade of ‘development’ Ouagdougou is now a bustling cosmopolitan city where the traditional is rapidly giving way to commercial push. UNTIL very recently Ouagadougou, the capital of Upper Volta, was a distant and mysterious town where few Europeans had ever ventured. Bristol Myers Squibb also said the impact of the attack had been limited, but other ERT customers had to move their clinical trials to pen and paper. One of ERT’s clients, IQVIA, said it had been able to limit problems because it had backed up its data. As a result, the German authorities said, a woman in a life-threatening condition was sent to a hospital 20 miles away in Wuppertal and died from treatment delays. The attacks, once treated as a nuisance, have taken on greater urgency in recent weeks as American officials worry they may interfere, directly or indirectly, with the November election.Ī ransomware attack in Germany resulted in the first known death from a cyberattack in recent weeks, after Russian hackers seized 30 servers at University Hospital Düsseldorf, crashing systems and forcing the hospital to turn away emergency patients. The incidents followed more than a thousand ransomware attacks on American cities, counties and hospitals over the past 18 months. NBC News first reported the attack on UHS on Monday, and said it appeared to be “one of the largest medical cyberattacks in United States history.” The attack on ERT follows another major ransomware attack last weekend on Universal Health Services, a major hospital chain with more than 400 locations, many in the United States. He declined to say whether the company paid its extortionists, as so many companies hit by ransomware now do. Bustos said it was still too early to say who was behind the attack. He added that ERT was starting to bring its systems back online on Friday and planned to bring remaining systems online over the coming days. “Nobody feels great about these experiences, but this has been contained,” Mr. Bustos said, the company took its systems offline that day, called in outside cybersecurity experts and notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation. On Friday, Drew Bustos, ERT’s vice president of marketing, confirmed that ransomware had seized its systems on Sept. It was used in three-quarters of trials that led to drug approvals by the Food and Drug Administration last year, according to its website. ERT said clinical trial patients were never at risk, but customers said the attack forced trial researchers to track their patients with pen and paper.Īmong those hit were IQVIA, the contract research organization helping manage AstraZeneca’s Covid vaccine trial, and Bristol Myers Squibb, the drugmaker leading a consortium of companies to develop a quick test for the virus.ĮRT has not said how many clinical trials were affected, but its software is used in drug trials across Europe, Asia and North America. The attack on eResearchTechnology, which has not previously been reported, began two weeks ago when employees discovered that they were locked out of their data by ransomware, an attack that holds victims’ data hostage until they pay to unlock it. A Philadelphia company that sells software used in hundreds of clinical trials, including the crash effort to develop tests, treatments and a vaccine for the coronavirus, was hit by a ransomware attack that has slowed some of those trials over the past two weeks. Kirchhoff’s loop rule states that the algebraic sum of the voltage differences is equal to zero. For example, consider a simple loop with no junctions, as in Figure 6.3.3.įigure 6.3.3 A simple loop with no junctions. Kirchhoff’s loop rule states that the algebraic sum of potential differences, including voltage supplied by the voltage sources and resistive elements, in any loop must be equal to zero. In a closed loop, whatever energy is supplied by a voltage source, the energy must be transferred into other forms by the devices in the loop, since there are no other ways in which energy can be transferred into or out of the circuit. The loop rule is stated in terms of potential rather than potential energy, but the two are related since. Kirchhoff’s second rule (the loop rule) applies to potential differences. If the wires in Figure 6.3.2 were replaced by water pipes, and the water was assumed to be incompressible, the volume of water flowing into the junction must equal the volume of water flowing out of the junction. The rules are known as Kirchhoff’s rules, after their inventor Gustav Kirchhoff (1824–1887).įigure 6.3.2 Charge must be conserved, so the sum of currents into a junction must be equal to the sum of currents out of the junction.Īlthough it is an over-simplification, an analogy can be made with water pipes connected in a plumbing junction. But what do you do then?Įven though this circuit cannot be analyzed using the methods already learned, two circuit analysis rules can be used to analyze any circuit, simple or complex. The resistors and are in series and can be reduced to an equivalent resistance. In this circuit, the previous methods cannot be used, because not all the resistors are in clear series or parallel configurations that can be reduced. A junction, also known as a node, is a connection of three or more wires. For example, the circuit in Figure 6.3.1 is known as a multi-loop circuit, which consists of junctions. In this section, we elaborate on the use of Kirchhoff’s rules to analyze more complex circuits. Many complex circuits cannot be analyzed with the series-parallel techniques developed in the preceding sections. We have just seen that some circuits may be analyzed by reducing a circuit to a single voltage source and an equivalent resistance.
